30 Sep 2026
Interviews in Sri Lanka, whether in the private sector or for government posts, tend to use a familiar set of questions. Preparing answers in advance helps you stay calm and sound confident.
Questions about you
- Tell us about yourself. Give a two-minute summary: education, experience and why you want this role. Do not repeat your whole CV.
- What are your strengths? Pick two strengths that match the job and give a short example for each.
- What is your weakness? Choose a real but minor weakness and explain what you are doing to improve it.
- Where do you see yourself in five years? Show ambition that fits inside the company.
- Why should we hire you? Connect your skills directly to the job requirements.
Questions about the job
- Why do you want to work here? – Research the company before the interview.
- Why are you leaving your current job? – Stay positive; never criticise a former employer.
- What do you know about this role?
- What salary do you expect? – Give a realistic range based on the market.
- When can you start? – Mention your notice period honestly.
Situation questions
- Describe a problem you solved at work.
- Tell us about a time you worked under pressure.
- How do you handle a difficult customer?
- Describe a mistake you made and what you learned.
- Do you have any questions for us?
For situation questions, use the STAR method: describe the Situation, the Task, the Action you took and the Result.
On the day
- Arrive 15 minutes early with printed copies of your CV and certificates.
- Dress neatly and switch your phone to silent.
- Always ask one or two questions at the end – it shows real interest.
