Applying for Foreign Jobs Safely: A Checklist for Sri Lankans
30 Sep 2026
Thousands of Sri Lankans find good jobs overseas every year, but fake offers and unlicensed agents are still common. A few simple checks can protect your money and your safety.
1. Check the agency licence
Licensed foreign employment agencies in Sri Lanka are registered with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE). Ask the agent for their licence number and verify it through the SLBFE's official channels before you pay anything.
2. Register with the SLBFE before you leave
Registration gives you access to insurance and welfare services and lets the Bureau help you if problems arise while you are abroad.
3. Warning signs of a fake offer
- You are asked to pay a large "processing fee" before any interview
- The job offer comes only through WhatsApp or social media, with no office address
- The salary is far higher than normal for the job
- You are told to travel on a visit visa and "convert it later"
- The agent wants to keep your original passport
4. Read your contract carefully
Make sure you receive a written contract in a language you understand. Check the salary, working hours, leave, accommodation, food, medical cover and who pays for the return air ticket.
5. Keep copies
Keep copies of your passport, visa, contract and agency receipts, and share them with a trusted family member at home.
If something feels wrong, stop and verify first. A genuine employer will not pressure you to pay quickly.
