Your First Job After A/L: Practical Options for School Leavers in Sri Lanka

13 Oct 2026

After the G.C.E. Advanced Level examination, many young people face a long wait – for results, for university admissions, or simply for a clear idea of what to do next. That waiting time can be one of the most useful periods of your life if you use it to earn, learn and build experience. This article looks at realistic options for school leavers in Sri Lanka.

1. Trainee and entry-level jobs

Many companies hire school leavers as trainees in roles such as:

  • Customer service and call centre agents
  • Sales and showroom assistants
  • Data entry and office assistants
  • Bank and finance company trainees
  • Hotel and restaurant trainees
  • Retail and supermarket staff

These jobs teach you how a workplace runs, how to deal with customers and how to work in a team. Many companies promote good trainees to permanent posts. When you apply, focus your CV on your A/L and O/L results, any computer skills, languages, sports and responsibilities you held at school.

2. Apprenticeships and vocational training

If you enjoy practical work, a vocational course leading to an NVQ certificate is one of the most reliable paths to a skilled job. Fields such as electrical work, air conditioning, motor mechanics, ICT, cookery and hospitality have steady demand both in Sri Lanka and abroad. Several government and private training institutions offer courses with industrial training built in, where you learn while working in a real company.

3. Internships

Internships are usually for students or recent graduates, but some companies take A/L students for short placements, especially in IT, media and marketing. Even an unpaid or low-paid internship can be valuable if it gives you real tasks and a reference letter. Be careful, however: an "internship" that asks you to pay a fee is not a genuine opportunity.

4. Government opportunities

Some state-sector posts accept candidates with A/L qualifications – for example certain clerical, technical trainee, armed forces and police recruitments. These are advertised with specific age limits and subject requirements, so read each notice carefully. Keep your certificates and NIC ready, because closing dates come quickly.

5. Part-time work while studying

If you are entering university or a private degree programme, a part-time job can help with costs. Tutoring younger students, weekend retail work, delivery jobs, freelance design or content writing are common choices. Make sure the hours do not damage your studies – your qualification is your long-term investment.

Skills to build in your first year

  • English communication. It is the single skill that opens most doors in the private sector. Read, listen and speak a little every day.
  • Computer skills. Learn Microsoft Word, Excel and email properly. Many entry-level jobs require them.
  • Typing speed. Free online tools can help you improve in a few weeks.
  • Driving licence. Many field and sales jobs require a motorbike or light vehicle licence.
  • Professional behaviour. Punctuality, respectful communication and reliability are noticed quickly.

Writing your first CV

A first CV can be one page. Include your contact details, a two-line profile ("A motivated school leaver with A/L in Commerce, seeking a trainee position in accounting"), your exam results, skills, school activities and two referees such as a teacher or principal. Avoid long personal details; employers want to know what you can do.

Avoid common traps

  • Do not pay anyone to get you a job.
  • Be careful with "work from home" offers that promise high income for easy tasks.
  • Read any contract before signing, especially training bonds that require you to pay back fees if you leave.
  • Make sure your employer registers you for EPF and ETF.

Think of it as the first step

Your first job rarely becomes your career, but it teaches you how work actually happens, gives you references and helps you decide what you want to study or do next. Many successful managers in Sri Lanka started as trainees, sales assistants or office juniors.
