Building a LinkedIn Profile That Gets Noticed by Sri Lankan Recruiters

13 Oct 2026

Recruiters at Sri Lankan banks, IT companies, apparel groups and multinationals increasingly search LinkedIn before they advertise a job. A complete, honest LinkedIn profile works for you twenty-four hours a day. You do not need to be a senior manager to benefit – students, graduates and people changing careers can use LinkedIn just as effectively.

1. A clear, professional photo

Profiles with a photo are viewed far more often than those without. Use a recent photo where your face is clearly visible, with a plain background and simple office-style clothing. A good phone photo in daylight is enough – you do not need a studio. Avoid group photos, sunglasses and wedding pictures.

2. A headline that says what you do

Your headline appears in search results, so make it specific. Compare:

  • Weak: "Looking for opportunities"
  • Better: "Accounts Executive | CIMA Passed Finalist | Payroll & Bank Reconciliations"
  • For students: "BSc IT Undergraduate | Junior Web Developer | PHP, MySQL, JavaScript"

Include the job title you want and two or three key skills that recruiters might search for.

3. The About section

Write four or five short sentences in the first person. Explain what you do, what you are good at, one or two achievements and what kind of role you are looking for. For example:

I am an accounts professional with three years of experience in manufacturing companies in Colombo. I prepare monthly management accounts, handle payroll for 200 employees and have automated several Excel reports that save the team hours every week. I am completing my CIMA qualification and am interested in finance roles where I can grow into analysis and reporting.

4. Experience – show results

For each job, list your title, company, dates and three or four bullet points. Start each point with an action and include numbers where you can: "Reduced stock discrepancies by 30% by introducing weekly cycle counts." Internships, part-time work and volunteer roles count – especially for fresh graduates.

5. Education, licences and certifications

Add your degree or diploma, professional qualifications (CIMA, ACCA, CA, AAT, CIM, NVQ and others) and short courses relevant to your field. Online certificates in areas like Excel, digital marketing or programming can help, as long as they relate to the jobs you want.

6. Skills

Add 10–20 skills that match job adverts in your field. Look at a few adverts you like and use the same terms – "Customer Service", "SAP", "Bank Reconciliation", "Social Media Marketing", "Python". Ask colleagues to endorse your top skills.

7. Settings that matter

  • Location: set your city in Sri Lanka so local recruiters can find you.
  • Open to work: you can let recruiters know you are open to opportunities – either publicly or visible only to recruiters.
  • Custom URL: change your profile link to something like linkedin.com/in/yourname and add it to your CV.
  • Contact information: add a professional email address.

8. Be active – a little

You do not need to post every day. Commenting thoughtfully on posts from people in your industry, sharing an article you found useful, or writing a short post about something you learned at work is enough to keep your profile visible. Connect with classmates, colleagues, lecturers and people you meet at events – always with a short personal note.

9. Stay safe

  • Do not publish your NIC number, home address or personal phone number on your profile.
  • Be cautious with recruiters who ask for money, bank details or OTPs – genuine recruiters never do.
  • Verify unexpected job offers through the company's official website.

A 30-minute plan

  1. Upload a clear photo (5 minutes).
  2. Write a specific headline (5 minutes).
  3. Write a five-sentence About section (10 minutes).
  4. Add your latest job and education with bullet points (10 minutes).

Then add skills and connections gradually over the next week.

LinkedIn helps recruiters find you; job portals help you find them. Use both – browse the latest jobs in Sri Lanka on JobPortal LK.
