What Does a Management Assistant Do? Government MA Jobs Explained

18 Oct 2026

"Management Assistant" (often shortened to MA) is a common post in government ministries, departments, provincial councils, local authorities and state corporations. It is a clerical and administrative role, and because it offers a permanent government job with a pension or provident fund, the vacancies attract many applicants. This guide explains the job and how recruitment usually works. Always follow the exact rules in the official gazette notice for each vacancy.

What the work involves

  • Handling letters, files and records, and keeping registers up to date.
  • Typing and preparing documents, minutes and reports.
  • Supporting accounts work: vouchers, payments, salary records and stores.
  • Dealing with the public at the counter and answering inquiries.
  • Helping officers with administrative tasks in a section or division.

The exact duties depend on the office. Management Assistants are usually grouped into service categories, for example writing, accounts, supply or typing, and each has slightly different work.

Usual qualifications

Notices commonly ask for:

  • G.C.E. O/L passes, often including Sinhala or Tamil, Mathematics and English, with credit passes in some subjects.
  • G.C.E. A/L passes in a number of subjects.
  • For some categories, typing or computer qualifications, or accounting subjects.
  • An age limit, which is stated in the notice.

Requirements change between notices, so read the qualifications section of the gazette carefully before applying.

How recruitment usually works

  1. The vacancy is published in the Government Gazette and on the institution's website.
  2. You apply using the format given, often by registered post or through an online system.
  3. Eligible applicants sit a competitive written examination, commonly with aptitude and general knowledge papers.
  4. Candidates who score well are called for a structured interview to check documents.
  5. Appointments are made in order of merit to the available vacancies.

Our guides on reading a gazette notice and filling the application form walk through the first two steps.

Preparing for the exam

  • Practise past papers under time limits; speed matters in aptitude tests.
  • Revise basic mathematics: percentages, ratios, simple interest and data interpretation.
  • Follow current affairs in Sri Lanka and the world for the general knowledge paper.
  • Improve your language skills: grammar, comprehension and letter writing.

Beware of paid "agents"

Nobody can sell you a government job. Selection is by examination and merit. Anyone asking for money to "fix" an appointment is committing a fraud.
