NVQ Levels Explained: Which Qualification Do Employers Ask For?

12 Oct 2026

"NVQ Level 4 in a relevant field" appears in many Sri Lankan job advertisements – for technicians, electricians, IT support staff, hotel staff, caregivers and many government posts. Yet many job seekers are not sure what the levels mean or which one they should aim for. This guide explains the National Vocational Qualification (NVQ) system in plain language.

What is the NVQ system?

The NVQ framework is Sri Lanka's national system for recognising vocational and technical skills. It is overseen by the Tertiary and Vocational Education Commission (TVEC). Courses are delivered by many registered training providers – government vocational training centres, technical colleges and accredited private institutes. What makes an NVQ valuable is that it is based on national competency standards: you are assessed on whether you can actually do the work, not just on written exams.

The seven levels

LevelWhat it generally means
Levels 1–2Entry-level skills. You can carry out routine tasks under supervision.
Level 3Skilled worker. You can do a range of tasks in your trade with some independence.
Level 4Fully qualified craftsperson or technician. You work independently and may guide others. This is the level most often requested for skilled jobs.
Level 5National Diploma. Supervisory or technician-level knowledge, with more theory.
Level 6Higher National Diploma level. Middle-management or senior technical roles.
Level 7Degree level in the vocational stream.

Exact course titles and durations vary by field and provider, so always check the course details and TVEC registration before you enrol.

Why employers ask for NVQ Level 3 or 4

For a hotel, factory or service company, an NVQ certificate is proof that a person has been trained and assessed to a national standard. It reduces the risk of hiring someone who claims experience but cannot do the job. In the public sector, NVQ levels are often written into the qualification requirements for technical and skilled grades, which means you may not be eligible at all without the right level.

Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL)

If you have been working in a trade for years without a certificate – for example as an electrician, welder, cook or beautician – you may be able to obtain an NVQ through Recognition of Prior Learning. Instead of attending a full course, you are assessed on the skills you already have. This can open doors to better-paid jobs and to overseas employment, where certificates are often required. Ask a registered training centre or TVEC about RPL assessments in your trade.

How to choose a course that leads to a job

  1. Look at job adverts first. Spend a week reading vacancies in the field you like. Note which NVQ level and trade they ask for.
  2. Check registration. Make sure the course and the institute are registered and that the course leads to an NVQ certificate, not just an institute certificate.
  3. Ask about on-the-job training. Courses that include industrial training or an apprenticeship give you real experience and contacts.
  4. Consider the full path. Starting at Level 3 or 4 and progressing to Level 5 or 6 while working is a practical route for many people.
  5. Think about overseas options. If you plan to work abroad, ask which certificates the destination country recognises.

Popular fields where NVQ matters

  • Electrical and electronics, air conditioning and refrigeration
  • Motor mechanics and heavy machinery
  • Construction trades – masonry, plumbing, carpentry, welding
  • Information and communication technology
  • Hotel and tourism – cookery, food and beverage, housekeeping
  • Health care support – caregiving and nursing assistance
  • Beauty, hairdressing and garment manufacturing

Putting NVQ on your CV

Write the exact title, level, trade and year – for example "NVQ Level 4 – Electrician (2024)". Keep the original certificate safe and carry certified copies to interviews. If you are still studying, write "NVQ Level 4 – Electrician (in progress, expected 2026)".
