How to Prepare for an Online (Zoom, Teams or WhatsApp) Job Interview

18 Oct 2026

Online interviews save travel time and money, and many companies – especially in IT, BPO, banking and foreign recruitment – now use them for the first round. They also bring new problems: a weak signal, a noisy room, a phone that falls over. Most of these are easy to avoid if you prepare the day before.

The day before

  • Install and test the app. If the invitation is for Zoom or Microsoft Teams, install it on your phone or laptop and sign in. Open the meeting link once to check it works.
  • Check your data. A 30-minute video call can use several hundred megabytes. Make sure you have enough data or a stable Wi-Fi connection, and keep a data package ready as a backup.
  • Charge everything. Power cuts happen. Charge your phone or laptop fully and keep a power bank nearby.
  • Choose your place. Find a quiet room with a plain wall behind you and light in front of you, from a window or a lamp. Light from behind makes your face dark.
  • Tell your family. Ask them to keep the room quiet and not to walk in during the call.

Setting up the camera

Put the phone or laptop on a steady surface at eye level – a few books under a laptop work well. Do not hold the phone in your hand. Sit so that your head and shoulders are in the picture. Look at the camera when you speak, not at your own image on the screen.

What to wear

Dress exactly as you would for an office interview, at least from the waist up. Plain colours look better on camera than strong patterns.

During the interview

  • Join five minutes early. If there is a waiting room, stay patient.
  • Keep your microphone on while speaking and mute it if there is sudden noise.
  • Speak a little slower than normal; online sound often has a delay.
  • If the connection breaks, rejoin immediately using the same link. If you cannot, send a short polite message or email explaining what happened.
  • Keep a printed copy of your CV, a pen and paper in front of you to note names and questions.

Sharing documents

Some interviewers ask you to show a certificate or send your CV during the call. Keep your documents as clear PDF files on the device, named simply, so you can find them quickly.

Be careful with "interviews" that ask for money

A genuine employer will never ask you to pay to attend an online interview, buy software, or send your bank PIN, OTP codes or passwords. If that happens, end the call. Read our guide on how to spot fake job adverts.

After the call

Send a short thank-you email within a day. Mention the position and one thing you discussed. It is a small step that many candidates forget, and it leaves a good impression.
