How to Spot Fake Job Adverts and Job Scams in Sri Lanka

13 Oct 2026

Job scams cause real harm. People lose savings, hand over their NIC and bank details, or travel abroad on the promise of work that does not exist. Scammers know that job seekers are under pressure and hopeful, and they design adverts to exploit exactly that. Learning the warning signs takes ten minutes and can save you a great deal.

The golden rule

A genuine employer pays you. You should not have to pay an employer to get a job. Legitimate government recruitment may charge a small, clearly stated examination fee paid to a state account, and licensed foreign employment agencies may charge regulated fees. But any request to pay a private person, a mobile number or a personal bank account "to secure" a job is a serious warning sign.

Common types of job scams

1. Registration or training fee scams

The advert promises a well-paid job with few requirements. After you apply, you are told you are selected – but must first pay for "registration", "uniform", "training" or "processing". Once paid, the company disappears or keeps asking for more.

2. "Work from home" and online task scams

You are offered money for liking videos, writing reviews or completing simple online tasks. At first you receive small payments to build trust. Then you are asked to "invest" or "upgrade your level" to earn more. The money you deposit is never returned. These scams are often run through messaging apps and social media.

3. Fake foreign job offers

Someone claims to have jobs in the Middle East, Europe, Japan or Korea and asks for a large payment for visas and tickets. They may be unlicensed agents or not agents at all. Some victims travel and find no job, a different job, or worse conditions than promised.

4. Identity and data theft

A fake "HR department" asks for copies of your NIC, passport, bank card or one-time passwords (OTPs) "for salary processing" before you have even had an interview. These details can be used to open loans or accounts in your name.

5. Fake government job offers

Messages claim that a person can get you a government job, or that a "special quota" exists, in exchange for money. State recruitment follows published procedures – usually an open notice, an exam and/or an interview. No individual can sell you a place.

Warning signs to look for

  • Any request for money before you start work.
  • A salary far higher than normal for the qualifications asked.
  • No company name, no physical address, or only a mobile number.
  • Contact only through WhatsApp, Telegram or social media, with no official email.
  • Pressure to decide immediately – "only three seats left", "offer ends today".
  • Free email addresses for a company that claims to be large.
  • Requests for OTPs, PINs or online banking passwords – never share these.
  • Poor spelling and vague job descriptions with no real duties listed.
  • An interview that happens only by chat, followed quickly by a "selection".

How to check an employer

  1. Search the company name together with words like "scam" or "fraud" and see what others report.
  2. Check the official website and compare the contact details with those in the advert.
  3. Call the company's main landline (found independently, not from the advert) and ask whether the vacancy exists.
  4. For government jobs, find the notice on the institution's own website or in the Gazette.
  5. For foreign jobs, check that the agency is licensed with the Sri Lanka Bureau of Foreign Employment (SLBFE) and that the job order is approved.

If you have been targeted

  • Stop all payments and communication immediately.
  • If you shared bank details or an OTP, call your bank at once and ask them to block your cards and accounts.
  • Keep all evidence – screenshots, phone numbers, receipts and account numbers.
  • Report to the police. Cyber-related fraud can also be reported to the relevant cybercrime units. Foreign job fraud can be reported to the SLBFE.
  • Warn friends and family who may receive the same message.
