Work From Home Jobs in Sri Lanka: How to Tell Real From Fake

Since 2020 many Sri Lankan companies and overseas clients hire people to work from home. Software development, customer support, bookkeeping, writing, design and online teaching can all be done remotely. At the same time, "work from home" is the favourite phrase of job scammers. Knowing the difference protects your time and your money.
What genuine remote jobs look like
- A named company with a website, a physical address and people you can look up.
- A clear job title and duties – "Customer Support Executive (Remote)", not "easy online work".
- Requirements that match the work: skills, experience, a laptop and a stable connection.
- A normal hiring process: CV, interview, sometimes a test, then an offer letter.
- A salary or rate that is realistic for the work and the skills.
Common remote job scams
Task and "like" scams
You are paid small amounts to like videos or rate products, then asked to "upgrade" by depositing money for bigger tasks. The deposits are never returned.
Typing and data entry with a fee
You must pay for "software", "registration" or "training material" before receiving work. Real employers do not charge you to work.
Pyramid or network schemes
Your income depends on recruiting other people, not on doing a job.
Cheque and payment-forwarding tricks
You are asked to receive money into your account and send it on. This can involve you in fraud and money laundering.
How to check an offer
- Search the company name and the recruiter's name online, together with the word "scam".
- Check that the email comes from the company's own domain, not a free email address for a large company.
- Ask for a written offer that states the salary, hours, payment method and notice period.
- Never send your NIC copy, bank PIN, OTP codes or passwords to someone you have not verified.
- If you are asked to pay anything, stop.
Skills that remote employers want
Good written English, reliable internet, basic computer skills (email, Google Docs or Microsoft Office, video calls) and the discipline to work without supervision. For technical roles, a portfolio – a GitHub profile, design samples or writing examples – often matters more than certificates.
